Graduado en estudios de arte en Los Angeles diseñó coches durante un par de años para Ford; más tarde se desempeñó en el ámbito del diseño industrial para empresas como Atlas Cement, U.S. Steel, Phillips, Sony Minolta, Bandai y conceptos arquitectónicos para cadenas de hoteles como el Intercontinental.
Fue a finales de los setenta cuando empezó a trabajar para Hollywood y gracias a su vasta experiencia su trabajo despuntó desde sus primeras películas.
Debido a un linfoma perdió la vida a los 86 años dejando como legado una de las mejores configuraciones del imaginario de ciencia-ficción moderna. Sus diseños pudieron verse en películas esenciales como 'Blade Runner', 'Tron' o 'Aliens: el regreso', lo que lo convierte en uno de los nombres esenciales para entender la estética actual del género y cómo hemos imaginado objetos, vehículos y edificios del futuro.
